Giovanna Cutolo is a girl who has already had an intense working life during which she has gone from advertising to journalism. Seven years ago, she had a lucky meeting which led her to what she considers her vocation. In 1998, she left everything and went to Vicenza to attend a course of jewellery design. She studied the history, design and working of jewellery with passion and intensity. Then she returned and started to work very hard.
After creating a mountain of designs and numerous prototypes, she thought she had found her own particular way in a very crowded and difficult field.
In 2000 she exhibited her first creations.
The jewel has a long and complex history behind it, which has seen it go from an almost exclusive demonstration of power and wealth to the pure ornament, from handmade item to mass production. This last evolution aroused her curiosity and interest and Giovanna wanted to develop a very particular path aimed at the intelligent and non-archaeological recovery and craftsmanship and its advantages of careful work of personalisation of the object.
Two lines of research then joined to this idea. The first looked at the past, at jewels personalised with engravings and enamelings, which were particularly sought after by connoisseurs in the nineteenth century. The second line, on the other hand, looked ahead seeking for modernity, linearity and essentiality.
Giovanna still works, tries out, reflects and studies in her open space in via Medici, in a house with balcony access with arches and columns. A sober environment, which preserves an antique charm, where the jewellery is stored in glass domes. The show case is also very discreet, a play on transparency that leaves glimpses of a single jewel suspended on a thread.
